(August 2, 2011 – North Providence, RI) – The cancer program of Our Lady of Fatima Hospital has been accredited for three years with commendation by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC). Applying for and maintaining CoC accreditation is a voluntary commitment by a cancer program that ensures its patients will have access to the full scope of services required to diagnose, treat, rehabilitate, and support patients with cancer and their families.
The Fatima Hospital cancer program received three areas of commendation for outstanding performance: prevention and early detection, cancer-related quality improvements, and reporting structures related to the laboratory.
Recognizing that cancer is a complex group of diseases, the Commission on Cancer Program Standards promote consultation among surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, and other cancer specialists. This multidisciplinary cooperation results in improved patient care.
“We are very proud of the quality of cancer care services provided at Fatima Hospital,” said Dr. Kathy Radie-Keane, chairperson of the hospital’s cancer committee. “Our committee is constantly researching the newest and best treatment and techniques to deliver up-to-date, cutting edge care, as evidenced by our accreditation with commendation.”
Accreditation by the Commission on Cancer is granted only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in cancer diagnosis and treatment and are able to comply with established CoC standards. Each cancer program must undergo a rigorous evaluation and review of its performance and compliance with CoC standards.
“The Commission on Cancer accreditation process is one that ensures cancer patients are receiving the clinical and support services necessary for positive patient outcomes,” added Kenneth H. Belcher, President and CEO. “We are proud to participate in this survey process and pleased that the commission has accredited our cancer program for three years with commendation.”
