A. ROBERT BUONANNO,
M.D., NAMED CHAIR OF SURGERY AT FATIMA HOSPITAL |
(North Providence, RI, April 2, 2007): Dr. A.
Robert Buonanno, FAAOS, FACS, of Cranston, has been
appointed Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Our
Lady of Fatima Hospital. His appointment was ratified
by the Board of Trustees of St. Joseph Health Services
of Rhode Island (SJHSRI), the corporate parent of Fatima
Hospital.
Dr Buonanno has been a member of the hospital's medical
staff since 1982. Completing his graduate studies at
the New Jersey School of Medicine, Dr. Buonanno performed
his internship and residency at Brown University, Program
in Medicine before entering private practice. He is
a Fellow in both the American Academy of Orthopaedic
Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Buonanno, a board certified orthopedic surgeon,
becomes the first surgical sub-specialist to head the
Department of Surgery. Bishop Thomas Tobin, Chairman
of the SJHSRI Board of Trustees, stated "As a surgical
sub-specialist, Dr. Buonanno's appointment is a reflection
of the growing sophistication of Fatima's surgical capabilities,
which today includes an excellence in many areas, including
neurosurgery, urology and orthopedics".
More than 18,000 surgical procedures are performed
each year at Fatima, which has one of the most advanced
operating facilities in New England. The Gelineau Surgical
Pavilion offers surgeons a wide array of sophisticated
surgical technologies, including orbital equipment arrays
and computer assisted surgery capability.
Dr. Buonanno heads the Center for Orthopaedics, Inc.,
in Johnston, Rhode Island. "I am gratified to become
the new Chair of Surgery", Buonanno stated. "I
am committed to continue the growth of Fatima's surgical
capabilities and to make our facility the safest surgical
venue for patients in Rhode Island, as well as to ensure
that our facility is efficient, collaborative with other
specialties and "physician friendly".
Our Lady of Fatima Hospital is a full service acute
care community hospital and is affiliated with St. Joseph
Hospital for Specialty Care. Together, they provide
services to more than 200,000 patients each year.
