Joseph P. Mazza, M.D., Marshall Raucci, Jr.,
and Joseph G. Samartano, Jr., DDS, have been appointed
members of the Board of Trustees of St. Joseph Health
Services of Rhode Island (SJHSRI), the state's Catholic
health system.
Dr. Mazza, a resident of Cumberland, is a cardiologist
with RI Cardiovascular Group. He holds board certifications
from the American Board of Internal Medicine in both
Internal Medicine and in Cardiovascular Disease. He
is a faculty member at the Brown University School of
Medicine and is on the medical staff of several metropolitan
area hospitals. A graduate of Providence College and
George Washington University School of Medicine, Mazza
has directed medical research in the areas of hypertension
and in chronic angina and has published several clinical
papers.
Mr. Raucci, a resident of Wakefield, is a principal
and investment consultant for the firm of Prime, Buchholz
and Associates based in Portsmouth, NH. In this capacity
he provides independent investment management consulting
to a range of clients with assets totaling more than
$6 billion. Previously, he was an executive vice president
and managing director at the former Fleet Bank. He is
a graduate of Marist College and SUNY College at Buffalo,
where he received a master's degree.
Dr. Samartano, a resident of Jamestown, is chief of
the Division of Dentistry and Oral & Maxillofacial
Surgery at St. Joseph Health Services. Following 35
years in private practice, he currently serves as coordinator
for the hospital's school-based dental program in Pawtucket
and is an attending surgeon for the pediatric dental
residency program. A Fellow of the American Association
of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a Life Member
of the American Dental Association, Samartano has also
volunteered extensively for area organizations including
the American Cancer Society and the Jamestown Shores
Association. He is a graduate of Providence College
and the Georgetown University School of Dentistry.
The Most Reverend Thomas Tobin, Bishop of Providence
and chairman of the board of trustees of SJHSRI, stated
"These appointments bring us three individuals
who will augment the clinical and business strengths
of our Board, strengths that are critically important
as our organization continues to adapt to the rigors
of today's health care environment"
SJHSRI is the corporate parent of Our Lady of Fatima
Hospital in North Providence, St. Joseph Hospital for
Specialty Care in Providence and the St. Joseph Living
Center also in Providence. Sponsored by, but financially
independent from, the Diocese of Providence, SJSHRI
has more than 2,000 employees and has annual budget
in excess of $180 million.
